A quest for purpose and the triumph of solidarity over loneliness.
Are We Not Horses
from the beloved & acclaimed record, a sci-fi musical about precarious robots.
We made a musical. And did it in Atlin BC with Nakai Theatre
Songs from Rock Plaza Central
Production conceived and adapted by Jacob Zimmer
In a future Canada, a pack of robot “horses” search
for work, dignity and respect.
In 2007, Rock Plaza Central released an album about robot horses facing an existential crisis and it catapulted the band across Canada and the United States as a critical and fan favourite. The scope of storytelling and world building, combined with the horn and string arrangements and soaring drum lines lifts spirits and excites the imagination.
Now, for SummerWorks 2017, Rock Plaza Central – Chris Eaton, Scott Maynard, Rob Carson, Andrew Innanen, Donald Murray, Fiona Stewart, Louis Apicello – joins with theatre maker Jacob Zimmer and Toronto performers Elley Ray Hennessy, Nicole Stamp, Liz Peterson; live video artists Lorena Torres Loaiza and Trevor Schwellnus; dramaturge Vicki Stroich; and collaborators and producers Alison Wong and Hillary Rexe in bringing a new show to life.
A Small Wooden Shoe and Nakai Theatre project.
Thanks to the support of Summerworks, Canada Council for the Arts and the Toronto Arts Council for supporting the creation process, travel and presentation.
